Mid Cent. Modern Watches, Art, Décor, & More!
On Saturday August 21, Hess Fine Auctions' sale will feature masters of mid-20th century art and design with offerings of fine art, watches, jewelry, furniture, and ephemera of the era. Of these are the works of the world renowned Richard Arbib, who worked for many companies ranging from industries such as automobiles, boats, railroad, rubber, watch, jewelry, and even science fiction art. A doyen of 20th century design, Richard Arbib's résumé and credits are endless - he even dated famed pinup darling, Bettie Page. It should be noted that much of the Arbib related pieces in this auction are from the private collection of Jeffrey P. Hess, CEO and owner of Hess Fine Auctions. Jeffrey Hess, known worldwide for his horological research, met with Richard Arbib in 1987 and had the pleasure of interviewing the legend, which was featured in Mr. Hess' first published research in Ed Faber's book, American Wristwatches: Five Decades of Style and Design. You can read that interview HERE. "This is a true sale of the Atomic Age!" roared Mr. Hess raising his head from a deep focus inspecting large piece of jewelry. "Arbib had an eye for the future; his work clearly stands out amongst many of his contemporaries." Hess affirmed. "The shapes and designs of his work are more at home on the set of a science fiction production than anything else." Hess explained further. This does hold some truth as Arbib's famous Ventura watch is worn by the alien hunting duo in the 1997 feature film Men in Black. Another famous face who wore his iconic design was the King of Rock 'N Roll himself, Elvis Presley. Jeffrey Hess elaborated on this by noting, "Not only did Elvis wear and Arbib design, our auction also showcases the collection of Elvis' personal advertising agent, Ken Clanton."
