Lovely Archive of African American Art, Consisting of Originals, Limiteds and Prints

A fantastic group of African American artwork consisting of 4 pieces as shown below:

1. An original painting of a young child's portrait on aged canvas, 10" x 12". Signed and dated by the artist, Albert H. Sonn lower right, "A.H. Sonn / 1884". The artwork is very detailed to the head and face with stunning contrast between the intensity of the paint used for the head compared to the very soft palette tones for the clothes. Some flaking and rubbing to the paint, with slight damage to the outer margins of the canvas and the background paint being slightly grubby. 

2. An original 4" x 5" watercolor painting of a young girl's portrait. Unsigned but on the verso is written "Uncle Al-My Dad paid $10 "ransom" for this. SSM" and then along the lower edge is "Albert Sonn". The art appears to have similar qualities to the above work in that the head and face of the young girl are highly detailed with a stunning contrast between the intensity of the paint used for the head compared to the very soft palette tones from the clothes. The art and sheet and are near fine condition with only light age toning.

3. A superb limited edition signed print by Arthur D. Fuller. Dated '32, and signed in graphite below the art  "321/350 / Easter Church goers / Arthur D. Fuller".  Margins are slightly grubby but could be matted out,  both the art and signature are in very good condition. 15.5" x 11.5"

 Arthur D. Fuller (1889-1966) was educated at Harvard University, the Fenway School of Illustration in Boston, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.  He was an illustrator and artist for newspapers, periodicals, and books, and whose specialty was the illustration of hunting and fishing. Earlier in his career, Fuller had illustrated more general subject matter for many major magazines, including Greenbook, where he started, Redbook, The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, The Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, The American Legion, and McCall's.

4. A lovely detailed black and white photogravure print by A.B. Frost, 1891, depicting a band of African American musicians in heavy coats and hats, holding their instruments and walking through a snow laden field. 12.25" x 9.25". Margins lightly foxed and stained but could be matted out. The art is in very good condition.
