Vintage Black Americana Advertising, 13 Pcs

A small collection of vintage Black Americana advertising memorabilia for J.P. Alley's Hambone Cigars, Higgins' Soap, and Fairbank's Gold Dust Washing Powder, ca. 1880-1930. The racial caricatures are typical of the period. 13 pieces total. Extremely colorful and in excellent condition overall with light expected wear.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A large cardstock two-sided revolving sign, such as you would find suspended from the ceiling of a tobacconist's shop, advertising J.P. Alley's Hambone Sweet 5-cent cigars, depicting a black aviator in a biplane. Gilt accents in near fine condition. 7" diameter.

2. A complete days-of-the-week collection of chromolithograph trade cards, Monday through Sunday, advertising Higgins' German Laundry Soap and its applications for general cleaning, laundry, bathing, etc. An example is: "Saturday. Whoa! Dar Sambo! What do year mean, what makes yer jump and shout, I will wash yer clean with Higgins' Soap and then yer may jump out." Three of the seven cards are stamped with the name of a Noank, Connecticut stationer's verso. 2.875" x 4.25."

3. 5 die-cut color trade cards depicting the Gold Dust Washing Powder twins affiliated with the N.K. Fairbank Company of Chicago. Two cards depict the twins soaking in a large tub of foaming bubbles. Advertising slogans include both "Gold Dust: The World's Best Cleaner" and "Gold Dust: Turns Wash Day into Play Day." Isolated pencil marks or the name of a former collector discretely stamped verso, else near fine. Average size: 3" x 3.625."

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
