Matthew Arnold ALS to Fellow Novelist Julian Sturgis

1p, measuring 4.5" x 7", "Athenaeum Club", Pall Mall, London, dated May 27, no year. Signed "Matthew Arnold" and address to novelist Julian Sturgis Esq. Arnold responds to a request to contribute a piece of writing, in full:

"Mr. Locker has forwarded to me Mr. Lodge's kind proposal, made through you. I write so little and so slowly, and have engaged myself so much, that I must not think of undertaking to become a contributor to any fresh review. I know you already in print, but I shall be very glad to make you acquaintance more completely if you will call here some Monday or Thursday about 3. I live in Surrey, (near where you, I think, once lived), and am in London only for a few hours at a time." Flattened mail folds, with minor soiling at the folds and corners.

Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was and English poet and critic, whose work can be compared to that of other Victorian greats such as Tennyson and Browning. He published numerous volumes of poetry as well as prose. Julian Sturgis (1848-1904) was a novelist, poet, and lyricist who was born in the United States but spent nearly the entirety of his life in Britain. In addition to his novels, Sturgis also provided the words to four operas, and is best remembered for his contribution to Arthur Sullivan's 1891 Ivanhoe.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
