Description
G.A.R. Souvenir Flask of 3 Assassinated Presidents
A souvenir porcelain flask or canteen decorated with the portraits of three slain American presidents: 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865); 20th U.S. President James Garfield (1831-1881); and 25th U.S. President William McKinley (1843-1901). The portraits were transferred and hand-painted recto, and a Grand Army of the Republic membership badge is depicted verso. The stopper neck and three hand-applied lug handles have been gilded. Missing the cork stopper and the original chain link strap. Expected surface wear including isolated gilt and paint loss. Overall crazing and scattered surface imperfections. Else good to very good. 6" high and 5.5" wide at the widest point.
The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization established in 1866 in Springfield, Illinois by Civil War veterans from all branches of the military. The group lobbied for the national recognition of veterans in the form of Memorial Day and other public commemorations, veterans' pensions, and the inclusion of female and black members into its society.
