Benjamin Franklin Document Signed

Lot 0244 Details

Description
Vellum manuscript DS, signed â€Å“B. Franklin,â€Â one page, 15.25 x 13, July 14, 1788. As president of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council, Franklin grants to John Lear a "certain Tract of Land called 'Trevose' situate on Laurel Run in Buffaloe Townshipâ€Â¦containing two hundred and seventy three acres." Boldly signed in the left margin by Benjamin Franklin, and countersigned below by James Trimble. Mounted, double-matted, and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 20.25 x 26.25. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining and soiling, toning along the intersecting folds, and small holes in the upper left corner that once held a large paper seal.

The Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania comprised the executive branch of the Pennsylvania state government between 1777 and 1790, with its president and vice president assuming the same roles as a modern day governor and lieutenant governor. Franklin's three-year presidency was one of his last acts of public service, as he passed away less than two years after leaving office. Franklin was also the longest serving president, having held the office for slightly over three years.
