Lot 0594 Details

Description
S.J Reginald Saunders. Little Norway in Pictures. A WW2 Large Hardback book showing signs of age. Signed By Neil K Strand. illustrated with black and white captioned photos interspersed with descriptive narrative. Decorative endpapers with stylized aircraft. Blue cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and with a vignette in gilt on the front cover of the insignia of the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Just touches of wear to extremities, cloth clean and bright, minor ding along lower edge of front cover, gilt slightly dulled, previous owner's (?) name on front free endpaper (Espeland), else fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket has several small tears and chips but is mostly all there. When Hitler invaded Norway in April, 1940, the Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service was unable to mount a successful counter attack. With Norway occupied by Germany, Norwegian leaders looked to North America for a place to train their pilots who had escaped to England. Various locations were considered, and a base around the Toronto Island Airport in Toronto was chosen. Once the base was established, young Norwegians migrated to the site to enrol in the Royal Norwegian Air Forces (RNAF). Norwegians flocked to "Little Norway" to train for duty in the war. The base was in use from November, 1940 to February, 1945. This book with its comprehensive profusion of black and white photographs documents all aspects of life in "Little Norway." An unusual piece of WWII militaria. Date determined from the contents where the latest date mentioned is 1943. In any case, it is clear from the content that it was published while the war was still in progress. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99
