1719 Japanese Botany Chinese Encyclopedia Herbal Horticulture Plants Illustrated
An interesting Edo woodblock-print of an ‘Illustrated Encyclopedia of China’ from the 18th century by the famous artist Tachiban Morikuni. Morikuni was a leading eighteenth-century painter, illustrator and writer, who lived and worked in Osaka. His major illustrated books include, Ehon Koji-dan, Morokoshi Kimmo-zui, Unpitsu soga, and others. His Morokoshi Kimmo-zui was extensively illustrated with depictions of contemporary China, Chinese learning and customs, astronomy, landscapes, architecture, mythology, martial arts, weaponry, farming practices, and more.
This rare undated single volume is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading with illustrations of China’s fruiting flora and other horticulture!
