James G. Blaine Endorsement Signed in Support of an Assoc. Justice
2pp (front and back), measuring 8" x 9.75", no place, Ca. January 28, 1879. Signed "J.G. Blaine". The original letter of recommendation is addressed to Hon. Charles D. Evens, putting forward George S. Fisher to be appointed an Associate Justice of one of the territorial courts, with a vacancy in Arizona. Blaine has endorsed the recommendation on verso, writing in full: "I have known Judge Fisher for some years. I have every confidence in his capacity and integrity and have no doubt that he would discharge the duties of the position to which he aspires with credit to himself. I join in recommending his appointment." The letter has flattened mail folds and light soiling. Mounting residue along the left edge of the front page. With a large, bold signature.
James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893) served as a representative from Maine in the House of Representatives and as U.S. Secretary of State under President Benjamin Harrison. He was an early supporter of Abraham Lincoln and fought for black suffrage during Reconstruction. Praised for his charismatic oratory skills, Blaine was nicknamed "the Magnetic Man".
