1p autograph letter signed by Nathan Clifford (1803-1881), Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, as "Nathan Clifford" at center. Written in Portland, Maine on September 30, 1873. On a leaf of bifold stationery with a blind embossed "C" at top. The inner pages are blank. A few words are slightly smeared, including the "t", "f", and "d" of Clifford's signature. A few ghost ink impressions at bottom. Expected transmittal folds, else very good to near fine. 4.875" x 7.875."

"Portland - Sept 30 1873
Dear Sir
Yours of the 30th soliciting my autograph is duly received and I herewith comply with your request
Yours Truly
Nathan Clifford."
Clifford served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court between 1858-1881. His pro-Southern, pro-state's rights policies complicated the Court's decisions in the years immediately before, during, and after the Civil War.
