Description

O. Ellsworth Document Signed Shortly After the Signing of the Declaration, 1776

1p, measuring 8.25" x 6", Hartford, dated August 14, 1776. A handwritten document signed "O. Ellsworth" and addressed to John Lawrence, Treasurer. Ellsworth directs Lawrence to pay an individual, writing in full: "Please to pay Mr. John Scripture Two pounds twelve shillings for Expense of his son's sickness while a soldier in the Colony's Service & charge the State." With docketing on verso as well as a signed statement by Scripture for money received. Accompanied with a mounted color engraving of Ellsworth. The document has flattened folds and light toning. With a large, bold signature. 

The document was written shortly after the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence. The following year, Ellsworth, Connecticut's state attorney for Hartford County, was selected as one of Connecticut's representatives in the Continental Congress. Ellsworth served in Congress from 1777-1780 and again from 1781-1783, serving on numerous committees including the Board of Treasury.
