Horace Greeley Autograph Letter Signed Re: An Autograph of Bayard Taylor
1p of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 7.75", New York, dated July 22, 1858. Signed "Horace Greeley" and addressed to W.T. Barker, Esq. A short letter regarding procuring an autograph of a colleague. In full: "Signatures of Bayard Taylor I have not, and I won't easily procure them. He is expected here this Autumn." With flattened mail folds and minor additional creasing. Clear signature, very fine.
Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was the founder and editor of the "New York Tribune". He hired Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) in 1848 and sent him on his first assignment to California to cover the gold rush. Greeley would later spearhead an unsuccessful campaign in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Grant.
