Patrick Henry Land Grant Signed During His Second Term as Governor

1p of vellum, measuring 14" x 13.75", Richmond, VA, dated May 17, 1786. A land grant signed "P.Henry" as Governor of Virginia. Reading in part: "…there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto James Hutchinson assignee of William Marshall Junr. & John Fowler a certain Tract or Parcel of Land, containing Twenty thousand six hundred and ninety eight acres…" With a paper and red wax seal at the lower margin. The document has flattened folds and additional creasing. Uneven edges, with soiling and wear. Foxing and spotting throughout the document. Heavy soiling and toning on verso. Boldly signed. Property of the Chrysler Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit Museum Acquisitions.

Patrick Henry (1736-1799) was one of the most eloquent mouthpieces of the American Revolution. He was a prominent Virginia planter and lawyer when he gained fame as an orator for the cause of American independence. While leading opposition to the Stamp Act of 1765, he delivered his famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech, which was not actually published until 1815. Henry twice served as Governor of Virginia -- this document was signed during his second term in office.
