Description
Charles E. Hughes Signed Harris & Ewing Photo, with Bonus Supreme Court Press Photo
Two vintage photographs relating to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The lot is comprised of:
1. A silver gelatin print photograph of Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948), future Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, signed, dated, and inscribed by him along the bottom margin as, in part: "With cordial regards, / Charles E. Hughes / July 2. 1921." (The name of the person to whom Hughes dedicated the photo is unclear, possibly "Mr Leo Milgunier.") The black and white matte photograph is copyrighted in stone as "Harris & Ewing" at lower left. Minor silvering to the edges, and slightly unevenly trimmed. Mounting traces verso. A tiny bent corner at lower right, else near fine. 7" x 10.625."
In July 1921, Hughes was just five months into his stint as Harding-appointed U.S. Secretary of State.
2. A bonus photograph of the United States Supreme Court Bench, ca. February 8, 1935. A glossy black and white photo of the Supreme Court courtroom, with the original Associated Press credit information affixed to the stamped photo back. A closed tear located in the lower left corner. Hinged along the right edge to a framing mat. Overall size: 9" x 6.875."
This photo dates from the Hughes-era Supreme Court; Charles Evans Hughes served as 11th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court between 1930-1941. The date of the photo is especially interesting because the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. was completed in early October 1935. Prior to having their own designated space, the Justices had convened sessions in New York City, Philadelphia, and multiple chambers in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. This photo thus dates just eight months before the relocation of the Court to the Supreme Court Building.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
