Declaration Signer Samuel Huntington Letter Signed to Gov. of Maryland
1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.5", Philadelphia, dated October 16, 1780. Signed "Saml. Huntington President" and addressed to His Excellency, the Governor of Maryland. Marked "Circular", the document reads, in part:
"Your Excellency will receive herewith enclosed the copy of a resolution of Congress respecting such unappropriated Lands as may be ceded or relinquished to the United States by any particular State, persuant to the Recommendation of the 6 of [illegible] September last. With the highest respect…" With docketing on verso, reading in part: "Resolved to be taken into consideration on Tuesday the 22 instant." The document has flattened mail folds, with small separations being repaired with archival tape. Light toning and foxing throughout. Ink burn has caused a minor amount of paper loss. Boldly signed.
Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) was born in Connecticut and admitted to the bar in 1754. He established a practice in Norwich, Connecticut, and served in the legislature and as King’s Attorney. As a delegate to the Continental Congress (1776-1781), he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He succeeded John Jay as President of the Continental Congress in September 1779 and held that position until 1781. He later became Governor of Connecticut (1786-1796), and led the battle for Connecticut’s ratification of the Federal Constitution.
