John Jay Military Appointment Signed, Superb

1p partially printed, measuring 10.5" x 7.5", New York, dated January 17, 1824. An appointment document signed "John Jay" and countersigned by Secretary "Daniel Hale." The document appoints "Hendrick Hulst Lieutenant of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the County of Dutchess whereof John B. Van Wyck Esquire, is Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant…" Matted and framed with a large, color portrait of John Jay to the overall size of 16.25" x 22.75". The appointment has flattened folds with light toning and foxing. Boldly signed by Jay.

John Jay (1745-1829) was a patriot, Founding Father, and diplomat. Jay helped to negotiate and sign the Treaty of Paris in 1783 and later wrote "The Federalist Papers" with Hamilton and Madison. In 1789, George Washington appointed Jay the first Chief Justice of the United States. Upon retirement, Jay served as Governor of New York until 1801.
