Herbert Hoover TLS, Re: "Roosevelt Administration"

HOOVER, HERBERT. Typed Letter Signed, “Herbert Hoover”, 1 p., on his personal letterhead, May 30, 1934, [Palo Alto], 7.25" x 10.75", to close friend, Jeremiah Milbank. Flattened mailing folds, mounting remnants at verso, else Fine.

Hoover’s dislike of Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and journalist, Walter Lippmann, is apparent in this post-Presidency letter, “If there is anything in the Roosevelt Administration which falls along the lines which we laid down, I would be glad to know it. However, Walter Lippmann has never been right on any subject and his wiggling around to try and get away from the Administration is only proof of the worm that he is.”

Hoover ends his letter on a more personal note, “I wish that you and Mrs. Milbank could come out to California. That would give us an excuse to devote a week or two to showing you the real joys of the United States.”

Walter Lippmann (1889-1974) was an American reporter, journalist, and author who in a 60-year career made himself one of the most widely respected political columnists in the world. He attended Harvard University, completing the requirements for his degree in three years, graduating formally the following year with the celebrated class of 1910. Several of Lippmann's books on political science have become classics in their field. Lippmann won two Pulitzer Prizes, one in 1958, and one in 1962.
