Description
Jacques Villon ALS: "thank you with all my heart"

A 1p autograph letter in French inscribed overall and signed by French Cubist artist Gaston Duchamp (also known as Jacques Villon) (1875-1963) as "Jacques Villon" at lower right. Written at Les Sables (France?) on September 17, 1954 (interpreting the "7bre" of Villon's handwritten date to mean "September" according to older usage as opposed to the seventh month of July.) On a small cream-colored stock card measuring 3.625" x 3." Near fine. Accompanied by a high-quality photo reproduction of Villon's "Soldiers Marching" (1913) mounted on an orange stock card.

Gaston Duchamp, who adapted the nom d'artiste Jacques Villon, wrote an unidentified correspondent. Translated in full:

"17 7th 54 Les Sables

My dear Bonfils,

Kind of you to show, and [so] quickly, your friendly sympathy. I'm very aware of it and thank you with all my heart.

Jacques Villon."

Villon was the older brother of well-known twentieth-century French artists Raymond, Marcel, and Suzanne Duchamp. A Cubist, Villon experimented with geometric forms and is credited with largely single-handedly popularizing modern art in the United States.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
