Description
James McNeill Whistler 2x Signed Card Featuring Famous Butterfly Signature!

A card inscribed and 2x signed by American expatriate painter James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), once as "J Mc. Neill Whistler" and once with his celebrated butterfly signature. Inscribed as "With great pleasure - / Yours / J Mc. Neill Whistler" near the top, and with Whistler's exquisite and minutely delineated butterfly signature found at the lower left. N.d., n.p. Expected wear including a vertical fold at center, else near fine. 5.75" x 3.675." Accompanied by a souvenir 50 dirham stamp from Sharaj and Dependencies (which joined the United Arab Emirates in 1971), depicting Whistler's most famous painting, "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (1871), more commonly known as "Whistler's Mother." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Though undated, we can suggest a broad time period for this lovely double autograph, based upon a known chronology of the development of Whistler's butterfly signature. Whistler started using the butterfly in the 1860s, inspired by the spare yet elegant maker's marks found in Asian pottery. The artist's initials "JMW" were morphed into a stylized butterfly symbol with wings, antennae, and a long, stinger tail. Whistler's special symbol became so iconic that he often signed his artwork with the butterfly signature instead of with a written signature.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
