Bill Groethe (1923-2020) Black Elk Photograph
Item Details
Description
Featured in this lot is this photograph of Black Elk by South Dakota photographer, Bill Groethe, circa 1948. In the fall of 1948, Bill Groethe, the apprentice of a professional photographer in Rapid City, South Dakota, met with the survivors of the Battle of Little Big Horn at a nearby park to photograph them as a group and individually in their native dress. Shortly after Geothe's employer ran off with his mistress to somewhere in California, in the late 1980's, the negatives were recovered and returned to Bill Geothe, and he printed the photographs of the survivors. This is a picture of Black Elk in ceremonial garments in front of a tipi. The photograph is signed in the bottom right-hand corner with the date above it and shows the name of the individual photographed in the bottom left-hand corner. Mr. Geothe was the only person authorized to print these photographs prior to his death in 2020. The condition of this photograph is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this photograph are 27 1/4" x 20 1/4".
