1p, [5.75” x 8.75”] Single Page TLS by Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, 51 Chambers Street, New York, January 20, 1917. Signed “Benjamin N. Cardozo”, and addressed to Honorable A. T. Clearwater. Signed five days into Cardozo’s tenure as an Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, Cardozo thanks Judge Clearwater for his “…Kind words of congratulation” and “Good wishes”.

Signature signed in black fountain pen. Expected folds from mailing.

Alphonso T. Clearwater was admitted to the bar in 1871. He served as the district attorney of Ulster County, NY, and as judge on the New York supreme court and court of appeals. He died in Kingston, New York.

Benjamin Cardozo was nominated to the Supreme Court by 31st U.S. President and Republican Herbert Hoover in 1932. Cardozo, along with left-leaning justices Harlan Fiske Stone and Louis Brandeis, formed the “Three Musketeers” and voted in favor of many New Deal policies. From 1932 to 1937, they faced off against the “Four Horsemen”, as conservative justices George Sutherland, Willis Van Devanter, James Clark McReynolds, and Pierce Butler were called.
