Gov. Simon Snyder Two Pennsylvania Militia Commissions Signed

A mounted display of two military commissions signed by Pennsylvania Governor Simon Snyder. The two documents, along with a carte-de-visite and newspaper clipping, are mounted to a thick cardstock to measure 16.75" x 27" overall. Both documents are signed "Simon Snyder" and are issued to Daniel Oldenburg, a veteran of the War of 1812. The display has uneven moderate toning throughout, along with large areas of dampstaining. The two commissions have flattened folds, along with spots of soiling and foxing. The second commission has lost a portion of the bottom of the document, and both have tears and uneven edges. For further condition details please refer to the photographs. Boldly signed by Snyder.

The display includes the following:
1. 1p, measuring 13" x 13.5", Philadelphia, dated August 3, 1811. Commissioning Daniel Oldenburg "Lieutenant of the Light Infantry Company attached to the 2d Battalion of the 25th Regiment of the Militia of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." Countersigned by Secretary "N.B. Boileau."

2. 1 partial page, measuring 10.5" x 9.75", Harrisburg, dated August 15, 1814. Commissioning Daniel Oldenburg a Captain of Independent Volunteers of the Pennsylvania Militia, First Brigade of the First Division.

3. Daniel Oldenburg Carte-de-Visite. Measuring 2.25" x 3.5", No place, undated. A vignette portrait of Oldenburg, with a handwritten caption on back reading: "Daniel Oldenburg Captain in War of 1812. Grandfather of S. MacDougal."

4. Daniel Oldenburg Obituary Newspaper Clipping, dated 1863.

Simon Snyder (1759-1819) was elected the third Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and served three terms from 1808 to 1817. He strongly supported the War of 1812 and helped lead Pennsylvania through the war. This support briefly led to him being considered as a possible running mate for James Madison in the election following the war, but this never came to fruition.
