Ernest Hemingway Signed Check to Friend and Secretary R. Herrera, 1955

Measuring 6.25" x 2.75", Havana, Cuba, dated July 28, 1955. A Spanish-printed check, No. 108206, drawn on the First National Bank of Boston, Havana Branch, with a payment of 200 pesos made out to Roberto Herrera. Signed "Ernest M. Hemingway." Endorsed on verso by Herrera and stamped with multiple bank stamps. The check appears to have been cashed the following day on July 29, 1955. With a flattened centerfold and light foxing. With minor ink bleeding from the bank stamps and cancellation punches. Bold and clear signature. A similar signed check was just sold in our January 2022 auction, selling for $3,000 including commission.

Ernest Hemingway moved to Cuba in early 1939 due to a separation from his second wife, Pauline. He initially lived at the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Havana but eventually moved to Finca Vigía, or Lookout Farm, 15 miles outside Havana. Roberto Herrera was a close friend to Hemingway and served as both his personal secretary and manager of Finca Vigía.
