Item Details

Description

Carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of Henry Benjamin Whipple (1822-1901), an Episcopalian Bishop and champion of Native American rights in Minnesota. It was at Whipple's urging that President Abraham Lincoln commuted the death sentence of 265 Sioux Indians who participated in the Dakota War of 1862 (Sioux Uprising).
Superb contrast and condition. Reverso bears the imprint of a photographer located in St. Paul, Minnesota.
