Brussels: Marc-Michele Bousquet, 1741.
Folio: 9 3/4 by 15 1/2" (384 x 240 mm).
Title page in red and black with engraved vignette.
Finely illustrated with 12 engraved plates (10 folding) and 2 maps
(map of New Spain engraved by I.A. Schwebel and Plan of Mexico City)
Some of these illustrations of native Mexican Indians represents the indigenous gods of the Nahuatl, including elaborate engravings of Huitzilopochtli and the ritual of human sacrifice.
Cornerstone of Mexican History, probably the most remarkable written in Spanish, the work is regarded as the most popular history of America that had then been written.
The work covers the three years between the appointment of Cortes to command the invading force and the fall of the city.
Rebacked original calf, spine gilt with 6 raised bands.
Some wear to binding, very good condition.
