Description
James J. Corbett (1866-1933) Heavyweight Champion. “Gentleman Jim” won the championship in 1892 when he knocked out John L. Sullivan in 21 rounds. He held the title until 1897 when he was knocked out by Robert Fitzsimmons. Corbett was one of the most analytic boxers in the history of the sport. He was a master of defensive tactics rather than a heavy puncher. His book, The Roar of the Crowd, G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1925, first edition. Signed on the first blank page, “To my dear friend Walter Smith, with warmest regards from Jas. J. Corbett, Bayside, N.Y., June 11/28." The dust jacket, now protected has some clipping, the previous owners bookplate has been affixed. Overall condition is very good. Walter Smith is believed to be the Pulitzer Prize-winning sports journalist Walter 'Red' Smith.
