Marmontel's controversial philosophical historical novel, drawing parallels between General Flavius Beisarius of Byzantium and French King Louis XV. Bookplates of 19th-century collector Edward Hailcrone, James Toovey and a Sir Montague Shearman on front pastedown. Older catalog entry mounted to front free end paper. Previously part of a set of Marmontel's works, with spine label "Oeuvres de Marmontel"
