Description
Eloges des Academiciens de l'Academie Royale des Sciences
by M. de Fontenelle
The Hague: Chez Isaac van der Kloot, 1731
2 volumes
Size 4 1/4 by 6 3/4"
Bound in original calf armorial bindings with gilt-tooled spines in six compartments
Very good interior condition, damage to the leather in the center of the vol. I front cover
Text in Latin
The work introduces the public to 14 members of the Academie des Sciences deceased between 1725 and 1730, including Czar Peter, Isaac Newton, and Nicolas Hartsoeker.
The earliest example of a popular publication of Fontenelle's eulogies, the work is an important symbol of what today is seen as Fontenelle's primary accomplishment: while history has smiled on men such as Marsigli and du Verney, it is often forgotten that it was due to works like Fontenelle's, which heavily publicised their achievements to a popular audience, that they are remembered and acknowledged today.
Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657 – 1757), also called Bernard Le Bouyer de Fontenelle, was a French author and an influential member of three of the academies of the Institut de France, noted especially for his accessible treatment of scientific topics during the unfolding of the Age of Enlightenment.
