Born as the son of the mayor of Sindringen am Kocher, Ludwig Gottfried Klein (1716 - 1756) studied philosophy and medicine in Jena and Strasbourg; he earned his doctorate in 1738.
His appointment to the Odenwald was followed in 1743 by his appointment as personal physician to the count families.
Klein was regarded as a close companion and friend of Count Georg Wilhelm von Erbach (1731-1757), whom he accompanied on numerous journeys.
He described the people who lived here, their way of life and their peculiarities, their illnesses and, last but not least, the methods he used to heal them, in a manner that was as graphic as it was drastic.
It thus provides a deep insight into the ecological, economic, social and medical conditions in the Odenwald around 250 years ago.
With two further publications, Klein showed that his passion was for medical and scientific work.
