Edward S. Curtis Original Photographs
Item Details
Description
Included in this lot is a photograph collection of Native American Blackfoot Indians, unsigned though most likely photographed by noted Western photographer Edward S. Curtis. The collection includes Chief Stabs-By-Mistake, whose father in-law was Mountain Chief who became a target of the US Second Cavalry that was responsible for the 1870 Marias Massacre assuming the peaceful victims were part of Mountain Chief's warring band; Running Owl and New Breast, along with a group photograph of Blackfoot people titled on the reverse, "Group on St Mary's". Curtis was an American photographer and ethnologist whose work focused on the American West and on Native American people. Though Curtis was largely forgotten at the time of his death, interest in his work revived and continues to this day. The photographs are in good condition, foxing visible, slight corner folding, largest three measure 9.5"L x 5.75"W, smallest 7"L x 5"W
