Description
Etruria, northern Italy, Etrusco-Corinthian, ca. 630 to 540 BCE. A pleasing pottery aryballos presenting a spherical form adorned in hand-painted black and burgundy decoration. Sitting upon a round yet stable base, the bulbous body is topped with an attenuated neck, a broad, flared rim, and a ribbon-form handle connecting rim to shoulder. Though mostly embellished by solid-painted, horizontal bands, a ray motif surrounds the neck, further emphasizing the sloped shoulder. Size: 2.3" Diameter x 3" H (5.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
