Old Master Style, "A Friar Reading in a Church," 19th c., oil on canvas, unsigned, unframed, H.- 29

The original canvas has been relined. However, the older canvas seems to be detaching around the borders, particularly on the top, left side and bottom corners. Two areas of canvas missing on the right side and bottom right corner. There is a slight tear to the canvas on bottom right corner as well. Paint loss is visible to the right of the friar’s face, as well as the top border and left top corner. Above the Friar’s head is a 1 1/8 inch scratch to canvas. On the right side of the figure there is a surface scratch visible. Under black light one can see 5 areas of in-painting on the bottom portion of the canvas, primarily on bottom of robe and around the feet. Some craquelure is also visible in dark area of painting over figure. The painting would benefit from an overall cleaning, but it is still a handsome example. ________________________________________________________________________________ ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD "AS IS."
