Item Details

Description

Laura Gilpin (American, 1891-1979). Photograph titled "Maria Martinez Making Pottery," depicting famed Pueblo potter Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1887-1980) seated, smoothing out the interior of a pot. Silver gelatin print. Pencil signed and dated 1959 to the mat along the lower right edge of the photograph. Gilpin and Martinez were longtime friends, and Martinez posed several times for Gilpin.
