Description
Ansel Adams 1st Ed. SB "Yosemite and the Range of Light"

A first edition, fourth printing of "Ansel Adams: Yosemite and the Range of Light" (Boston: Little, Brown and Company for the New York Graphic Society, 1979), signed by photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984) as "Ansel Adams" on a bookplate affixed to the front loose endpaper, Carmel, California, ca. 1981. Isolated water stains found in the margins of several pages. Minor shelf wear including edge and corner bumping to the cloth-covered boards. Expected wear to the dust jacket including several tears, one repaired on the back, as well as wrinkles. Else near fine and generously illustrated--a true coffee table book. 15.375" x 12.25" x .75."

The oversized hardcover copy includes a foreword by Ansel Adams and an introduction by conservationist Paul Brooks. According to the attached bookplate, this copy "is one of a special edition prepared for Time/Life Books subscribers with the signature of the photographer." The gray cloth-covered boards with a gilt-printed red cloth spine were bound by A. Horowitz and Son of Fairfield, New Jersey. Complete with its original publisher's dust jacket as issued with the unclipped $100 retail price still found on the left flap. 28pp of text. Features 116 Adams photographs printed on thick, glossy paper by the Pacific Lithographic company of San Francisco. The photographs depict serene and sublime views of the natural landscape of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and the Yosemite National Park as photographed over a 40-year period, from the 1920s to the 1960s.

Adams’s interest in photographing natural scenery coincided with his joining the environmentalist Sierra Club in the 1920s. Although Adams did commercial photography to pay the bills, it was always transcendent views of the natural landscape that captured his imagination and inspired his technical photographic innovations.
