Description

John S. Mosby, Confederate Commander of "Mosby's Raiders" in Uniform CDV

Carte de visite portrait of John S. Mosby, measuring 2.45" x 4.875", Ca. 1863, n.p. Waist up portrait of Mosby in uniform, with gilt detailing to edges. Pencil notations on verso with no backstamp. Light toning and foxing to both sides, otherwise very good.

John S. Mosby (1833-1916) was a Confederate Commander who, under the authority of Robert E. Lee, led the 43rd Virginia Cavalry Battalion, more commonly referred to as "Mosby's Raiders". The Cavalry was notorious for their evasive tactics and ability to disrupt Union communications and supply lines. After the Calvary's disbandment in 1865, General Lee later noted that Mosby was "zealous bold, and skillful, and with very small resources he has accomplished a great deal".

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
