Biography
David Holt described his photographic layered work as a visual poem, "a vision that becomes more real than an actual description of every detail." His photography is his way of examining reality, where depth and perception are altered.

Born in Illinois, he moved to Los Angeles and attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, where he was mentored by Lorser Fietelson. Holt later taught at the College.

Pre the digital revolution, Holt used a very intricate technique of multiple exposures to change the mood and focus of his images. Before beginning the photo sessions Holt would sketch his ideas. He would photograph on an 8 x 10 Ektachrome transparency, then make a tracing of the photograph on paper and compare the intended look. By employing several partially masked exposures across one sheet of film, Holt planned the fine background sand textures so reminiscent in his work. He would hand color (pen, pencil, paint) up to 12 different transparent backgrounds before placing all the hand colored masks in a lightbox and rephotographing them to gain the illusory effect of his work. Holt estimated that it took him approximately 140 hours to create a final piece of photographic art.
