“If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I dont want them. I want men who will come if there is no road at all.”

― David Livingstone

David Livingstone was a Scottish medical missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late-19th-century in the Victorian era. In this book, Livingstone provides a detailed account of the discoveries of himself and H. M. Stanley with added discoveries in Africa.

“The geographical results of his journeys were of supreme importance and made it possible to fill in great stretches of the maps of Central Africa which hitherto had been blank” (PMM 341).

Livingstone discovered the Zambesi River and Victoria Falls (which he named), parts of Angola, and Mozambique; met with and observed the Hottentot. He was also able to discover some of the most devastating instances of slave trade, which propelled his abolitionist ideals.

This 1868 German edition was published in Leipzig – a rare and rather obscure edition of Livingstone.
