The 3000 copies were sold on the first day of issue, the complete printing was reportedly sold out in a few days. The second printing of 5000 sold out by the end of March. On May 15, 1852 fifty thousand copies of the first edition were sold. Before the summer was out sales had topped the hundred thousand mark. Until the end of the year 300,000 copies were sold.
