Item Details
Description
"Among the many great Dutch map publishers active in the seventeenth century were the Visscher family, begun by Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) and continued by his son Nicolaas (Piscator jun. 1649-1709).....Although mainly art dealers, the Visschers were prolific publishers, producing individual maps and atlases made up to their customer's specifications. They are commonly regarded as second only to the Blacus among Dutch mapmakers for the high quality of engraving and decoration and the geographical accuracy of their maps. Their world maps are particularly outstanding, not poly as maps but as works of art. The reproduction "Commander's Map" was based on a map that was originally made in the seventeenth century that shows in the four corners the cavalrymen of Commander Ninus (conqueror of Asia), Cyrus Maior (founder of Persia), Alexander the Great, and the Roman emperor Julius Caesar. The borders on the left and right show depictions of the 12 months and the illustrations on the foot are portrayals of compassion." This reproduction print of the map comes beautifully framed in a frame that is approx 44" x 2" x 32 1/2" and it weighs 20.50lbs. The print itself is approx 34" x 23". The framed map print is in a good, used condition with some light wear and scratches on the frame. Please see the images as they are part of the description.
