Fine US Model 1861 Dalhgren Bowie Knife Bayonet with Scabbard & Frog
Item Details
Description

12" single edged spear point blade with 5" false edge, 16.75" in overall length. Brass hilt and guard with froward swept upper disc quillon and rearward swept lower quillon. Wood grip with four finger grooves. Obverse ricasso marked in three lines U.S.N. / DR /1864 and reverse ricasso in two arched lines AMES MFG Co / CHICOPEE. Pommel cap with script DR cartouche of sub-inspector Daniel Reynolds. Bayonet includes its original and correct brass mounted leather scabbard with blackened buff frog that is marked USNY / BOSTON / 1864 in ink on the reverse. A very fine condition example of a rare and desirable bayonet with a great original scabbard and an extremely rare original belt frog.

Condition

Fine. Blade with much of the bright polish and a few scattered scuff marks. Metal shows some minute freckling and oxidation here and there. Markings remain clear and crisp on blade. Brass with a rich, dark patina. Lock latch in place and functional. Wood grip with scattered bumps and dings. Scabbard fine with some minor wear and surface finish loss. Frog fine as well.
