F. SCOTT FITZGERALD TYPED LETTER SIGNED - AUTHOR

Lot 1403 Details

Description
Novelist, best known for "The Great Gatsby". Fitzgerald was a popular celebrity of the day and he and his wife, Zelda, became famous for their extravagant lifestyle, drinking bouts and (eventually) erratic behavior. TLS "Scott", 8.5x11, June 19 1939 to his literary agent H.N. "Swanie" Swanson, with outstanding literary content, in full: "Though this story was actually commenced before 'Gone With The Wind' was published, the Collier's man told me it probably wouldn't be scheduled before a couple of months so it had best be referred to as a new story, which in part it is. I have looked over the list of story needs you sent me and it doesn't seem particularly to apply to any of them but perhaps will suggest something to you". Of historical note H.N "Swanie" Swanson was lured to Hollywood by David O. Selznick and RKO in the 1930s. After a stint as a Junior Producer, he was offered several employment opportunities at major studios. Refusing all for the opportunity to open his own business as a writer's representative, Swanson's client list grew to include a Who's Who of 20th century literature including Fitzgerald, Hemingway and William Faulkner.
