Description
Jefferson Davis autographed letter signed, dated 1887. A handwritten letter by the short-lived President of the former Confederate States of America to prominent Mississippian Joshua Hurty. Letter, datelined "Beauvoir Mississippi, 18th Jan. 1887," reads in full, "Presid. J Hurty / My Dearest Sir, I have the pleasure to acknowledge your letter of the 13th last, and it will give me great pleasure to receive you and the gentlemen named on Thursday rather than Saturday as I am expected in New Orleans on Friday evening and cannot return before too late an hour to receive you. Very Respectfully and truly yours, Jefferson Davis." Written from the Beauvoir, MS home of Davis, which was recently destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Single-sheet letter, measuring 5" x 7.5", accompanied by a lithograph bust of Davis. Sepia letter light with some light smudges on both sides not affecting readability. Very clear and legible. A handsome piece in the hand of the controversial beacon of the Confederate cause.
