Exceptional Quality John Adams Four Language Ship's Paper
JOHN ADAMS, 2nd American President.
Four Language Ship's Paper Signed, "John Adams" as President, on fine, laid paper, January 26, 1798, 15.5" x 19," Choice Very Fine. Some typical edge wear and fold separations, but unusually bright and fresh looking, with a bold, large signature. For the ship "Port Mary" bound for Belfast, Ireland from New York, carrying 249 tons of cargo, including "Flaxseed, Ashes, Tobacco, Indigo, Rosin, Tar, Turpentine, and Staves. Co-signed by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. Very fresh and bold in appearance, the white paper and wax State Department Seal at left, with all teeth evident. A full notary public's paper seal appears at the bottom, one of the few we have seen in this extra large format. A document perfect for framing and display, with a huge bold brown "John Adams" signature being very prominent. Rarely so original and nice. This exceptional document is from our August 2000 sale (Lot 1) where it realized $5,635.
