Description
192. JOHN C. FRÉMONT (1813-1890). Union major general, the first Republican to run for President (1856). Guided by Kit Carson, he explored that territory between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, mapping the Oregon Trail in 1842, gaining the reputation as the "Pathfinder." ALS "Frémont," 1p, 5¼"x8¾", [Rossmore Hotel, NY City, Aug 30, [n.y.]. To Colonel De Arnaud regarding a planned visit to his home. In part, "...I will take one of the Saturday afternoon trains. Do not trouble to meet me. I can readily find my [way] to the house and the walk short as it is will still do me good. With respectful regards to Madame..." Boldly penned and signed. Annotated in pencil at top margin; else Fine. Attractively matted beside ornate color presidential campaign printed image displaying oval portraits of General Frémont in uniform and his running mate General John Cochrane, overall 5"x6½". Contained under glass within simple wood frame. Overall 15½"x12½". Est: $400-700
