RICHARD E. BYRD SIGNED LETTER

Lot 0424 Details

Description
424. RICHARD E. BYRD (1888-1957). American Admiral, polar explorer and aviator; author; awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. TLS "R E Byrd," 1p, 8½"x11", Boston, Feb 12, 1938. On his imprinted address letterhead to Lieut. R.A.J. English aboard the USS Nevada in San Pedro, CA. Seeking support from a fellow Naval Academy officer regarding criticisms made against him. In small part, "...I had been bitterly criticized by some naval officers around here for not doing enough for my fellow naval officers who accompany me on expeditions...I was particularly criticized in regard to my failure to get a Congressional Medal for Davis who was with you...If you agree that I have done my duty towards the men who go with me, I would appreciate your writing to [Commander] Jackson and telling him what you think...Perhaps you know that I made every possible effort to get [Davis] back in the Navy and I think that was about all that I could do for him. I could not give him a medal because he was not in the Navy and for the reason you will note in my letter to Jackson..." Darkly signed at conclusion, adding in his holograph at margin, "If you do this please send me a copy." General light toning; light wear; small paper loss at top margin; else VG. The USS Nevada on which Byrd wrote this letter was attacked and beached Dec 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Est: $100-200
