Latin and French manuscript on parchment, presumably made in Paris around 1420 in the surroundings of the Boucicaut master
5 miniatures in opaque colors and gold, of which one full-page with gilt frame and narrow border, two with text below and richly decorated borders
3 adorned pages with four- and five lines initials in mauve and blue on gilt ground, filled with thorn leaf tendrils and text bordered on three sides
Several splendid three- to five line initials on gold ground with marginal border and with extending tendrils, as well as numerous initials over one or two lines as well as line fillers in gold on blue and mauve ground
154 (of 161) leaves, lacking 7 leaves, 2 leaves were added in the late 16th century
17 line textura in brown ink
Dimensions of leaves: 14.9 x 10.5 cm, text area: 8.3 x 5.6 cm
Splendid, gilt-tooled 16th century calfskin binding

These five miniatures were painted in opaque colors and gold, of which one full-page with gold frame and narrow border, two with text below and richly adorned borders. Two of the miniatures were made in the late 15th century and were added at a later point, of which one with gilt filiform tendril. Three sides adorned with four- and five line initials in mauve and blue on gold ground filled with thorn leaf tendrils, text bordered on three sides with tendril ornament in mauve and blue on gold ground and a border with golden thorn leaf tendrils, multicolor acanthus and blossoms. Several splendid three- to five line initials on gold ground with marginal border and with extending tendrils.


Numerous initials over one or two lines as well as line fillers in gold on blue and mauve ground. Initials alternating in mauve and blue with white-heightening on gold ground, filled with vine leaf tendrils, with thorn leaf tendrils with golden leaves and blue blossoms extending therefrom. Several initials over one to five lines on gold ground with marginal bars and tendrils.

Origin

The three original miniatures with their adorned borders hint at an origin of the book of hours in Paris around 1420 in the surroundings of the Boucicaut master. The two later miniatures from the late 15th century hint at Flanders (Saint Barbara) or even at a German origin (Mary with Child).


Condition

In good condition. Clean copy with broad margins. One miniature and three text pages with stronger rubbing. Else just slight traces of use. Parchment, as usual, creased. Parchment endpaper with full-page late 18th century ownership entry.


Binding

Splendid gilt-tooled late 16th century calfskin binding. Boards with gilt-tooled ornamental corner pieces and with rich scattered blossom patterns in gold. Cartouche in center with crucifixion scene. In good condition. Front board worn and rubbed. Corners and edges scuffed, spine ends blemished, front joint slightly broken.
