Letter by Thomas Tracy of the 5th New York Heavy Artillery, Co. H to his brother on 27 March 1864 from Ft. Marshall on elaborate ''Gen. Grant's Victory at Chattanooga'' stationery. Reads in part: ''…I have ben down to baltimmore on a pas and stayed all day their was ten of us on an pass you can bet we had fun all day…when we ask for it we have the best of officers over us that use us like men they don't act like Martin Snap round like an dog with an sore heel or if he had been kiling sheep we can talk to our officers like friends and all is rite for they are met amongst men. Baltimore is a large plase and we lay on the hill east of the city from the Fort and it is plesent as summer here but cool after al for it hasn't got very warm yet but it is getting warm very fast but tis rainy after all but we have had some sun here and but al is plesent at present we have been before the Sergan for examinations and I past but some did not and I suppose they wil be sent home fore long. That is the talk at present I saw in the herald that there was an nother call for 200 hundred thousand more but we don't need them I don't think for we have got all we can manage I should think but more the better for you after all…'' The 3pp., 5'' x 8'' letter has a few smudge marks, otherwise in very good condition.
