Description
SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE KITCHEN JAR AND COVER, manganese- and lead-glazed, graceful ovoid form with square galleried rim having an inner ledge supporting the original cover with button finial, two lightly incised rings just above base, both jar and cover with clamshell-like cut-off lines and fully glazed underneath. Glaze with branch-like pseudo crawling which occurred during the firing process. Rockingham or Shenandoah Co., VA. Circa 1850-1880. 8" HOA, 7 1/2" H rim, 3 1/2" D rim, 3 5/8" D base.

Provenance: From a Shenandoah Valley private collection.
Found in Shenandoah Co.
Catalogue Note: This jar is from an unidentified pottery located in northwestern Rockingham or southwestern Shenandoah Co. A large number of pots employing manganese glaze, and often an additional lead glaze featuring the branch-like pattern to the outer glaze have been recovered in the area west of Timberville/New Market in Rockingham Co. northward to the area west of Mt. Jackson in Shenandoah Co. See lot 14 in this auction for another jar with manganese glaze only and of identical form. The jar offered here retains a distinct smell of molasses.
