Description
SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE KITCHEN JAR AND COVER, manganese-glazed, graceful ovoid form with square galleried rim having an inner ledge supporting the original cover with button finial, both jar and cover with clamshell-like cut-off lines and fully glazed underneath. Rockingham or Shenandoah Co., VA. Circa 1850-1880. 8 1/2" HOA, 8 1/4" H rim, 3 3/4" D rim, 4" D base.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Purchased from Mary Cramer, Bridgewater, VA.
Catalogue Note: This jar is from an unidentified pottery located in northwestern Rockingham or southwestern Shenandoah Co. A large number of pots featuring manganese glaze have been recovered in the area west of Timberville/New Market in Rockingham Co. northward to the area west of Mt. Jackson in Shenandoah Co. See lot 11 in this auction for another jar with manganese and lead glaze of identical form.
