Description
STRASBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA POLYCHROME-DECORATED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE TOBACCO JAR OR VASE, lead-, copper-, and manganese-glazed over a slip wash, cylindrical shouldered form with a deep galleried rim, applied bird centering three flowers and two leaves on front, with incised feathers, veins, and petals. Probably the pottery of Jacob Eberly (1830-1908) and Daniel Letcher Eberly (1859-1919). Circa 1886-1903. 7" H, 2 3/4" D rim, 3 1/2" D base.

Provenance: Recently discovered.
Catalogue Note: This bird and flower decoration is usually seen on wall pockets. The jar offered here is one of only three recorded examples in this form. One of the other two specimens sold though this gallery on November 12, 2011. It was from the Dr. Charles Umstott collection and had been professionally restored.

Condition
Outstanding as-found condition with no restoration, shallow loss to one side of bird's head, some expected glaze flaking/wear to rim and base, small firing scar to back shoulder, as made.
